The reason I’m passionate about this is that I have been there, done that, and I found my way out.
Let me set the stage for you…
In 2014, I was dealing with chronic gut issues.
Everything I ate either blew me up like a balloon or went right through me.
I was getting food allergy symptoms (although I didn’t know that’s what they were at the time), even though I had given up gluten and over a year before and ate pretty “clean”.
As a corporate trainer I lived in constant fear that my “crop dusting” would humiliate me in a small, enclosed classroom.
As a vibrant woman I was losing my ability to feel confident in social situations–let alone romantic ones.
I constantly lived in fear that I’d have an emergency somewhere I couldn’t get to a bathroom in time.
I was over. It.
I knew I couldn’t continue to function this way and I was desperate to get back my freedom and confidence.
So, I started to experiment with allllllllll the things.
I tried different combinations of foods because I had read somewhere that “this” wasn’t compatible with “that” (completely unscientific, btw).
I slowly and methodically cut more “bad” foods out of my diet (even though I didn’t have much left to cut).
I was sure that eventually I would figure out what was setting off the digestive drama and find my way back to a healthy, balanced gut.
But that didn’t happen.
It got to the point where I would eat a grilled chicken salad with oil and vinegar dressing and be running to the bathroom 20 minutes later. What?!?
What was I doing wrong?
I was beyond frustrated. I considered myself to be a health-conscious, educated person and I could not crack this problem.
No matter what I tried, it all came back to this:
I was chained to the bathroom and I wanted my freedom and independence back.
I had no idea what the root cause of my problem was so I was just spinning my wheels, desperately grasping at anything I thought might help.
I had tried everything I had heard of and nothing was working. I was stressed out and worn out and I needed a way out, now.
Then, one day one of my besties told me about a gut-healing diet she had tried. Her digestive drama had been much more severe than mine and she’d been getting good results.
To be honest, it sounded kind of extreme and I wasn’t sure I had it in me to try one more thing.
I am so glad that I did.
Within the first week my gut had calmed down to the point that I wasn’t worried about bathroom emergencies. When I had finished the protocol my PMS symptoms had dissipated and I had even lost a bit of weight. Bonus!
It was the beginning of my healthy gut journey.
Coincidentally, a few months earlier I had enrolled in the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner training program. My experience with that gut-healing protocol, along with what I learned about digestion in the first few months of my program, cemented my desire to focus on gut health.
Over the years, my understanding of digestion, “leaky gut”, inflammation and chronic disease has only strengthened that passion.

I’m Maya Gangadharan, a functional nutritional therapy practitioner and co-author of The Healthy Gut Cookbook and The Healthy Gut Diet Guide + Cookbook (Penguin Random House).
I have a passion for gut health born of my experience and success with healing my own digestive issues.
I believe that digestion is a cornerstone of long-term health and longevity.
Most importantly, I’ve been where you are, and I know how to navigate this complicated and often frustrating path.
For fun, I love to cook for my friends, do musical theatre and hang with my rescue pup, Henna.
